Yes, this great-looking fence has a very real function about it. You see the Classic American Natural Wood Privacy fence is similar with the same posts, rails, and pickets, but is built differently. The Classic Dog Ear fence is built using a string to keep the top of the fence inline uniform shape.
Charleston Natural Wood privacy fence is built using french gothic posts set to height on installation. The backing rails are measured from the bottom of the notch to give it a clean look even while going over bumps and dips in the fence line. Picket boards are set to the ground to close out any gapping that might occur. You don’t have to worry if the top is straight; the top trim out is the last step here.
By nailing the pickets down to the ground we have effectively closed up any gaps under the fence. The actual height of the Charleston Natural Wood Privacy Fence is about 5-1/2′ at the center and 5′ at the post.
Posts are set evenly across each line maintaining a spacing of 7′-8′ apart. Keeping the spacing uniform across the line will also keep the arc trim out the same on the entire line.

I have seen CRAZY arcs cut into some fence lines, such as 10′ next to gate at 4′, with a 5′ section next to that. It means that the installation crew and maybe the fence company did not know how to lay out the posts. An attempt should be made to keep all line sections evenly spaced and the post spacing between 7′ and 8′ for consistency.
Notice the double gate (above right) has some interesting construction that is standard for our gates. First, the gates are double posted on the hinge side. Lots of dead weight gets extra support to carry the heavy natural wood panel. Next, we use THREE large black metal hinges per gate panel on privacy gates to ensure control of the gate panel. The gate panels are built with a 2″ x 4″ structure, and the framing is double Z Bar framing for additional strength. Double gates have TWO drop rods and a top latch for complete security!
