Classic Wood  Privacy Fence – Construction

Rotten Cedar Cypress fence post

Rotten Cedar Cypress fence post

Classic wood privacy fence constructed out of treated pine lumber is a workhorse lumber that will take a tremendous amount of abuse and neglect. The #1 problem with outdoor lumber is Subterranean Termites… natures dead wood clean up crew. The insecticide inside the lumber is specific to the termites and warranted for 10 years for structural integrity. Termites can start in the lumber but the insecticide will kill them.

Photo on the left is of a fence less than 6 years old riddled with termites. This pile of posts are the ones we could actually get out of the ground. The rest of the posts were to eaten up to pull out and the posts fell over!  This fence material was NOT TREATED for TERMITES and is being replaced with same style picket fencing, this time WITH LUMBER SPECIFICALLY TREATED FOR TERMITES!

Homeowner thought they were getting a fantastic deal with a cedar fence that would last for “generations”.  Actual materials used were a “KNOCK OFF CEDAR”, a very cheap lumber very attractive to termites.

CLASSIC WOOD PRIVACY FENCE

This homeowner was high pressured and conned into buying a product that was built to fail in East Tennessee. Do your homework and educate yourself on the correct lumber for a long lasting fence (20 years) in East Tennessee.  Why pay twice for the fence, get it right the first time!

Classic Wood Privacy Fence – The Foundation for all large fence styles

Classic wood privacy fence is the foundation for all of the other full size natural wood fence styles.  Spaced privacy, lattice top, shadowbox, rainbow, scalloped, inverted are all based on the same structure as the classic wood privacy fence.

Begining with 8′ treated pine posts (shot full of termite insecticide under pressure) set a full 24″ deep in the ground with a bagged concrete mix to secure the post footer. Use the treated pine posts (ACQ preservative) instead of lumber without the termite juice, for a long fence post life.  Use 3 backing rails to support the picket boards and use galvanized ring shank nails to secure the rails  to the posts, and also to secure the pickets to the backing rails. This design layout will be the fundamental framework for all of the other full size fence styles.
