Why are the cedar styles of fencing so susceptible to subterranean termites? The softwood cedar fencing used in the East Tennessee area is a low grade with low, if any, levels of tannin (the naturally occurring chemical that resists termites). Also, when using small trees, you have a lot of lumber containing both the sapwood and heartwood. The softer sapwood rots and decays rapidly in the ground, and insects love this lumber.
So the question remains: If you have a choice in a Cedar Fence that will rot or be eaten up by termites in 6 – 8 years vs. a Natural Pine Wood Fence chemically treated and WARRANTED AGAINST TERMITES, what will you choose?
Both fences will require staining in less than a year or they will turn a barn wood gray coloring. They will look about the same until the termites and rot take out the Cedar Fence. The choice is easy! Natural Pine chemically treated for termites will outlast your Cedar Fence 2 to 1, even 3 to one!
