Are you ready to purchase a wood fence for the backyard and just not sure about the company or the fencing? GREAT! You have come to the right place. We are here to educate you about wood fencing so that you can make good sound decisions and save hundreds of dollars in natural wood fence repairs! What part of the country do you live in? This information on the cedar and cypress is specifically targeted to the TERMITE BELT geographical areas (TENNESSEE, WESTERN NC, NORTHERN GEORGIA, NORTHERN ALABAMA, AND MISSISSIPPI). The area described has ideal climate conditions, cool wet climate, mild winters ideal for the subterranean termites growth. DID I SAY GROWTH? MORE LIKE EXPLOSION! Don’t believe me, just check how many local termite companies are in your area! Termites are nature’s clean up crew…and they are excellent at their job! Before you make a decision that could cost you thousands of dollars look in your subdivision for some of these same fences that are 5-10 years old. WHY? Because that’s what your fence will look like. Check out for termites damage like loose posts, rotten water damage boards, sloppy construction, missing concrete, check over the fencing and the company who installed. If you are not impressed with their product after only 5-10 years…then pass over the fence company.

CEDAR CYPRESS NATURAL WOOD FENCING – WHY CHOOSE THIS MATERIAL?

TERMITE NEST – fence first…is your home next?

Another great question! This is a very durable and quality product except for a CORNERSTONE PROBLEM. Cedar and Cypress fencing posts are subterranean termites’ favorite meal! Yes, in cold climates where the frost line is 3 foot deep, the termites slow down in the winter. Why not in the SOUTH? Our freeze line, or frost line, is actually only about 6″. This means that the ground seldom freezes deeper than 6″, leaving subterranean termites YEAR ROUND FREE MEAL TICKETS! And the subterranean worker termite, the ones eating your fencing and home, eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for 2 years until they die. Meanwhile, the queen mother termite is cranking out up to 2 MILLION termites, building the colony. What happens when there are too many termites in the colony? Termites will split the colony, swarm and start a new colony….at your expense.

CEDAR CYPRESS NATURAL WOOD FENCING WHAT CEDAR ARE YOU BUYING?

Red cedar is not the same as WESTERN RED CEDAR. Cedar that is red in color mixed with yellow (yellow is the sapwood and rots first) is not the high quality cedar needed for fencing. Cedar is graded for the quality of the cedar. Cedar grading ranges from cabinet grade all the way down to fencing lumber. Are you getting a #1 cedar product (clean, no knots), #1 one face, #2 cedar (large loose knots), #2 and better, #2 one face, #3 and better, #3 one face? With so many options available, unscrupulous fence contractors can easily write in your contract “Select Cedar” and select any grade and thickness they choose. Also watch out for the CLASSIC BAIT and SWITCH technique, specifying cedar in the contract. WHAT CEDAR, WHAT GRADE CEDAR, WHAT THICKNESS OF CEDAR, SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED. COMMON CEDAR SUBSTITUTIONS – white cedar, Atlantic cedar, CHINESE CEDAR, yellow cedar, swamp cedar, northern cedar, coastal cedar, fir, spruce.

CEDAR CYPRESS NATURAL WOOD FENCING – FENCING SOLUTIONS

YES, TERMITES ARE THE #1 PROBLEM FOR OUTSIDE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN THE SOUTHERN STATES. So what it the solution? Fencing lumber that is artificially chemically treated for termites, like SALTED ROASTED PEANUTS IN THE SHELL. How do they do it? Simply soak the peanuts in salt water, wait till the peanuts are saturated, then roast the peanuts. The moisture will escape, leaving the salt residue. Same principle applies here. Lumber is treated with a termite solution (in pressurized tanks) and when the treating is over they are stacked outside to dry. As the lumber dries out, the insecticide (termite) chemical is left INSIDE THE CELL STRUCTURE OF THE LUMBER. When termites attack the lumber specifically treated for termites, the termites eat the lumber and the poison…killing the termites.

CEDAR CYPRESS NATURAL WOOD FENCING – WHAT LUMBER IS SPECIFICALLY TREATED FOR TERMITES?

If you live in the TERMITE BELT and you want a natural wood fence to last more than 5 years, then choose a TREATED FOR TERMITES LUMBER such as pressure treated southern yellow pine. Don’t think you can get the same styles in picket and privacy fences in the treated for termites lumber? Check out these fences for ideas of beautiful natural wood fencing that IS treated for termites and carries a 10-year WARRANTY!
