That is a great start, but don’t stop here: Check with your own homeowner’s insurance company for what they require.  Even though the code may require 4′ high fencing, your insurance carrier may be more stringent, requiring a 5′ high fence. Notice the gate and latch on the left side of the photo above. The magna latch (magnetic latch – self-close) is 6″ higher than the rest of the fence.  That is because the pool code requires the fence to be 48″ high from the outside grade and the release latch for the gate hardware is 54″ high.  That extra little bit of height makes a HUGE difference when discussing small children. Gates also open OUT, AWAY FROM THE POOL!  This is to make it more difficult for a small child to open a gate, and maneuver inside the pool area. The gate may latch close before the infant can breach the fence.
